Creating Joi

When my daughter Aaliyah became a toddler, she started having eczema flare-ups. Her discomfort was heartbreaking and led me to looking for solutions that were safe and made a difference for her. Hours of research into essential oil blends became my obsession and resulted in me creating body butters of all uniques scents and balms for different uses. From there, based on my newfound knowledge, I created blends to cure everything from common cold woes in the winter to bug bite episodes in the summer. It gave me great satisfaction and relief to lean on these blends when my family was in need of a cure, rather than modern medicine.

My background in graphic design also connected me to different people from all walks of life. One such woman was a friend of mine who had a business making her own leather bags and wooden staffs. A Black Friday event hosted by another friend of mine inspired me to pay for this young lady to attend to enjoy exposure for her business. Unfortunately, a day before the event she canceled but persuaded me to go in her place. I was at a loss, as I had no real business to sell to a soul. How was I supposed to make something out of nothing and sell it?

Opportunity knocked and knocked hard as I sat in my kitchen that very same night, all of the blends I’d made for my daughter and family surrounding me.

If my family enjoyed healing and comfort from my offerings, why not someone else? I’d accumulated so many essential oils and butters over time. All I needed was the packaging, labels, and ambition to create a brand name for the product.

As a double down of confirmation, I’d walked into my bedroom and my baby girl looks up at me from my bed and smiles. The vision came together in my mind. The graphic designer in me was suddenly flooded with design concepts, color palettes, everything down to the font that would represent my daughter-the reason for the product.

I named the product after her middle Joi because she is the inspiration behind the quality products that everybody fell in love with. It’s my desire that everyone experience that same joy when they use my products for whatever form of self-care they desire, whether it be for leisure or for healing.
